ueIn a statement issued on 24 August 2016 by the European Union (EU) Delegation to the DRC, the multilateral called on the stakeholders to embark upon the dialogue process and guard against fostering political tension in the country through their actions.

The EU indicated that “a fair and inclusive dialogue remains the privileged path for arriving at a consensus on a credible electoral process that complies with the constitution and the UN Security Council Resolution 2277”.

The organisation requested the Congolese government to “guarantee an open political space and take more measures aimed to ease political tensions in the country, including releasing political detainees”.

The statement was issued following the launching of the preparatory works of the political dialogue on 23 August 2016 by the AU-appointed facilitator, Edem Kodjo.

I the same vein, the US government also issued a statement calling for an inclusive dialogue and respect for the Congolese constitution term-limitation.
