Fighting has flared up in the early hours of the morning in Beni, in eastern DRC, where unidentified armed men are said to have attacked the city, said local sources contacted by KINSHASATIMES.CD.

Heavy gunfire was heard in the neighbourhood of Rwangoma where assailants believed to be from the Mai-Mai armed group haved attacked government troops (FARDC) positions.

A school which where students were about to take their secondary school leaving exam (EXETAT) was hit by a bomb, leaving scores wounded.

Most Beni inhabitants, who were just starting to go about their businesses this morning, have hurriedly vacated the city, fearing for their lives.

Beni, which experienced a few months of peace recently, had previously been the epicentre of violence which claimed many lives. The city was repeatedly attacked by ADF-NALU rebels from Uganda. The violence this time round is reportedly caused by Mai-Mai, a local armed group.
